The Wind River Range doesn’t get Jackson’s crowds or Jackson’s prices, and that’s the entire draw. This is where the climbing and backcountry community actually goes — Lander is home to the National Outdoor Leadership School’s headquarters, and the granite walls of Sinks Canyon and the Cirque of the Towers draw climbers who’d rather skip the Teton lines entirely.
Sinks Canyon State Park, ten minutes from downtown Lander, is the easiest way to see the range’s signature oddity up close: the Popo Agie River disappears into a limestone cavern (the “Sinks”) and re-emerges a quarter-mile downstream in a pool full of trout that are, by park rule, unfishable.
Best for: climbers, backcountry hikers, and anyone who’s already done Jackson and wants the version of the Wind Rivers with a tenth of the people.
